Tentu saja, penulis harus bersaing dengan banyak penulis lain karena penerbit mayor akan menyeleksi naskah yang masuk. Terkadang, proses seleksi naskah pun memakan waktu lama karena banyaknya naskah yang diterima.

Penerbit mayor
Kalau ingin menjadi penulis dan hasil karya terbit di toko-toko buku besar, memilih penerbit mayor bisa menjadi pillihan. Namun, Anda harus siap dengan seleksi ketat agar naskah diterima. Bisa jadi Anda perlu menunggu hingga berbulan-bulan untuk kepastian naskah diterima.
Penerbit mayor memberikan penulis keuntungan karena mereka memiliki modal besar. Sehingga, biaya produksi, distribusi, dan promosi menjadi tanggung jawab penerbit sepenuhnya. Dengan modal besar, penerbit bisa langsung mencetak buku dalam jumlah banyak untuk cetakan pertama.
Penerbit besar juga umumnya lebih gencar melakukan promosi, diantaranya melalui media sosial. Tidak hanya itu, penerbit mayor kerap mengadakan launching buku bersama penulis, give away, dan book tour untuk memasarkan buku terbitan mereka. Menggiurkan bukan?
Tapi, penerbit mayor juga memiliki kelemahan, nih. Yang utama adalah proses penerbitan hasil karya penulis cukup lama. Selain itu, penerbit mayor mengutamakan keinginan pasar. Sehingga seleksi naskah atau tulisan yang diterima penerbit sangat ketat. Dan penulis harus siap menyunting naskah agar lebih sesuai dengan keinginan penerbit. Umumnya penerbit mayor hanya menerima naskah dengan genre tertentu sesuai aturan.
Penulis yang bukunya diterbitkan oleh penerbit mayor juga umumnya hanya mendapatkan royalti 10%. Selain itu, penulis juga biasanya harus menunggu penjualan selama 6 bulan baru bisa menerima royalti. Misalkan dalam 6 bulan buku Anda terjual hingga nominal Rp. 5 juta, maka penerbit akan memberikan royalty sebesar Rp. 500.000, belum dipotong pajak. Namun, ada beberapa penerbit mayor yang memberikan uang muka kepada penulisnya.
Penerbit indie
Selain penerbit mayor, penulis juga bisa menerbitkan naskah melalui penerbit indie. Sama dengan penerbit mayor, penerbit indie juga memiliki keunggulan dan kelemahannya sendiri. Salah satu keunggulan terbesar, naskah Anda berpeluang sangat besar untuk diterima. Tentu saja, asalkan naskah tidak melanggar hak cipta dan hukum seperti plagiat, copy paste, pornografi, atau hate speech.
Keunggulan berikutnya yaitu prosesnya lebih efisien dan lebih cepat. Mulai dari proses editing, layout, pembuatan cover hingga pencetakan. Penulis tidak perlu menunggu hingga berbulan-bulan agar naskah bisa dicetak. Terutama jika naskah dengan halaman yang sedikit, akan semakin cepat prosesnya.
Berbeda dengan penerbit mayor, penerbit indie bisa menyesuaikan jumlah eksemplar yang akan dicetak dengan sistem pre order. Biasanya, buku akan dicetak sesuai jumlah pesanan dari pemesan atau penulis. Penulis juga bisa bebas menentukan sendiri harga buku.
Nah, kalau kelemahan penerbit indie seperti apa? Untuk bisa mendapatkan penjualan besar, penulis harus aktif dan giat mempromosikan buku sendiri. Penerbit indie biasanya hanya melakukan promosi sekadarnya saja. Tidak ada launching buku seperti penerbit mayor.
Untuk biaya produksi juga biasanya menjadi tanggung jawab penulis. Namun, biasanya penulis akan mendapatkan bonus satu atau dua buku setelah terbit. Kelemahan dari penerbit indie lainnya adalah buku atau naskah hanya dijual secara online, tidak dijual di toko-toko buku besar seperti Gramedia. Penerbit indie bisa jadi memiliki tarif dan kebijakan berbeda. Jika Anda ingin menerbitkan buku dengan penerbit indie, ada baiknya riset dan pilih penerbit indie yang kredibel dan bisa dipercaya.
Nah, itulah perbedaan penerbit mayor dan indie yang bisa dipertimbangkan agar naskah Anda diterbitkan. Jika Anda sudah memiliki naskah, jangan ragu untuk segera mengirimkan ke penerbit agar buah pikiran Anda bisa dinikmati banyak orang. Ditunggu hasil karyanya! (ds3)
