Greysia/Apriyani menjadi juara di sektor ganda putri setelah mengalahkan Chen/Jia dengan skor 21-19 dan 21-15.
Pasangan yang berbeda 10 tahun itu memecah kebuntuan di sektor ganda putri yang sebelumnya gagal meraih emas Olimpiade.
Sejak bulu tangkis dipertandingkan di Olimpiade Barcelona 1992, Indonesia hampir selalu meraih emas.

Sektor tunggal putri dan tunggal putra mengawali tradisi emas Indonesia melalui Susi Susanti dan Alan Budikusuma pada Olimpiade 1992.
Empat tahun berselang, sektor ganda putra mencatatkan sejarah lewat Ricky Subagja/Rexy Mainaky.
Sejarah emas Indonesia di Olimpiade kemudian dilanjutkan di sektor tunggal putra dan ganda putra. Hingga kemudian Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir menjadi penyumbang emas pertama dari sektor ganda campuran.
Ganda putri akhirnya memecahkan telur di Olimpiade 2020 berkat penampilan gemilang Greysia/Apriyani. Dimana mereka yang mampu mengatasi serangan Chen/Jia yang merupakan pasangan unggulan kedua.
Sebelum Olimpiade Tokyo, prestasi terbaik ganda putri Indonesia adalah mencapai perempat final.
Greysia/Apriyani sekaligus menjadi satu-satunya peraih emas bagi Indonesia di Olimpiade 2020 setelah andalan Indonesia di empat sektor lainnya tumbang menjelang final.
