Israel dituduh melakukan kejahatan perang. Sementara Israel menuduh anggota militan Palestian yang menembak Shireen. Namun, sejumlah jurnalis lain yang meliput bersama Shireen mengatakan tidak ada militan Palestina di sekitar TKP.
Saat itu, para wartawan termasuk Shireen juga memakai rompi bertuliskan “Press” atau pers yang menandakan mereka wartawan. Tuduhan Israel terhadap militan Palestina juga dibantah oleh video dari anggota kelompok HAM Israel B’Tselem, Abdulkarim Sadi.
Video yang direkam Sadi itu menunjukkan militan Palestina berada di sebuah kamp yang jauh dari lokasi penembakan Shireen Abu Aqla.
Israel juga mengusulkan penyelidikan bersama dengan otoritas Palestina dan meminta Palestina mengembalikan peluru yang menembus tubuh Shireen, namun permintaan itu ditolak Palestina.
Setelahnya, Israel mengakui kemungkinan tentaranya yang menembak sampai tewas jurnalis senior Al Jazeera, Shireen Abu Aqla dan melukai rekan wartawan Shireen lainnya. Ini merupakan hasil penyelidikan internal sementara yang diungkapkan tentara Israel pada Jumat, 13 Mei 2022.
Jenazah Shireen dibawa melalui jalan-jalan Jenin, dibungkus dengan bendera Palestina dan ditutupi dengan jaket antipeluru persnya. Wartawan dan fotografer berkumpul di sekitar prosesi, yang harus meliput kematian salah satu dari mereka sendiri.
